Two Fantastic Charity Events Happening In Grand Cayman This March

Perhaps you want to do more this year to help mankind. Maybe giving back is a favorite pastime and one you don’t want to skimp on simply because you’re on vacation. If you’re planning a visit to Grand Cayman this March, the island paradise has two charity events scheduled that are as fun for the whole family as they are important to those they benefit. Take a moment to learn about these events before planning your itinerary. Depending on how long your visit to Grand Cayman will be, you may be able to attend both.

A Walk In Her Shoes

Support the Cayman Islands Crisis Centre that provides women, children, and men in abusive relationships with a safe haven. The crisis centre notes there is “no excuse for domestic abuse” on their website and sponsors several events throughout the year, including A Walk In Her Shoes on Thursday, March 5th. Men are encouraged to wear blinged-out heels as they strut their stuff down the designated area of Camana Bay in Grand Cayman. Painting toenails and wearing dresses and wigs are suggested as well to add to the fun.

Participants can register individually or as part of a group, with the entrance fee of $30 KYD. Every participant must walk a minimum of five laps in their fancy footwear. For every $150 raised, a lap gets removed. The centre hopes to reach its goal of $50,000 KYD this year; the event starts at 5:00 pm and ends at 7:00 pm.

Light Up The Night Breast Cancer Beach Walk

Enjoy participating in the 9th Annual Light Up The Night Breast Cancer Beach Walk on Saturday, March 7th. You’ll raise money for the Breast Cancer Foundation as you walk from the Royal Palms Beach Club to the Ritz-Carlton and back. Make a $25 KYD donation when you register and receive one raffle ticket entry; each additional ticket is $5 KYD.

Walk by the light of the (nearly) full moon before enjoying cocktail specials at the Royal Palms, as well as 10% off food. Who knows, maybe you will win one of the fantastic raffle prizes. The event goes from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm.

Free Events Throughout October On Grand Cayman

Just because you’re going on vacation doesn’t mean you have to spend a fortune every day of your trip. Grand Cayman may offer a variety of events you need to pay for every month, but there are plenty that fall into the “free of charge” category. Review some of the best free events happening in Grand Cayman this October as you plan your fall trip to one of the most celebrated islands in the Caribbean.

Imagination Playground Every Tuesday & Saturday At 10 am

Visit the Towne Center on any Tuesday or Saturday morning during your October Grand Cayman trip to give the kids a wondrous time without spending a penny. Imagination Playground combines dancing fountains with giant foam blocks in assorted sizes and shapes for children to play with. Your little ones can build animals, houses, rocket ships, and practically anything else they can think of during this free biweekly event. The huge foam blocks invite the imagination to stay and play awhile.

Open Canvas Every Wednesday At 7 pm

Support and celebrate local artists any Wednesday throughout the month of October at 7 pm with Open Canvas. Stop by KARoo in Camana Bay to watch artists bring new work to brilliant life. Participating artists must bring their own easel and supplies. This free event is a wonderful way to see what the area’s artists are working on and expose your children to the culture of the islands.

Sing-Along Story Time

Give the kids a chance to read during your vacation and meet local children with Sing-Along Story Time, a free event every Sunday at 10:30 am at Books & Books on Grand Cayman. The bookstore invites readers between the ages of 4 and 7 to enjoy this event, which includes singing along to their favorite stories.

Halloween Moonlight & Movies

Head to The Crescent on Halloween night (Thursday, October 31st) to watch a “spooky” movie for free. The Halloween Moonlight & Movies event shows a family-friendly movie every year from 7 pm to 9 pm for tourists and locals to enjoy. The title of the film will be announced closer to the event date but, you are guaranteed it won’t be too scary for the kids…or for you since we know not everyone likes horror movies.

The Annual Grand Cayman Orchid Show Is Back!

Mark your calendar right now: the annual Orchid Show is coming to the Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park on Saturday, March 30th and Sunday, March 31st, 2019. This annual festival is a must-see for anyone who grows the timeless blooms, as well as those who simply adore nature or want to get as much out of their Grand Cayman experience as possible. The show goes from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm on both days and costs $8. Children under 12 get in free. This event is in partnership with the Cayman Islands Orchid Society.

 

The Show

 

The Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park features 10 of the 28 recorded orchid species found on the Cayman Islands. Four of these orchids are found nowhere else on the planet. This makes the annual Orchid Show one you will never forget. In addition to the exhibition of locally-grown wonders, you will get to purchase imported specialty orchids, most of which should be blooming during the show. Conservation of native orchids is the heart of this festival, and your support goes towards creating an orchid garden within the botanic park. Professional orchid gardeners will also be on hand to provide the latest tips for cultivating and maintaining these eternally fascinating flowers.

 

In addition to educational presentations and hundreds of gorgeous orchids to marvel at, this festival provides barbecue fare to sink your teeth into. And what’s a local festival without local culinary magic?

Find this captivating botanic park off of Frank Sound Road. Keep in mind the barbecue will be available from 11 am to 3 pm only. Botanic garden staff also recommend coming early to “avoid disappointment” such as long wait times and a lack of food. Waiting too long to patronize the event can also mean the orchids you want to purchase are gone, so come early and ready to give your eyes, heart, and mind a real treat!

Walk & Wag Fun Run On Grand Cayman

On Saturday, October 14th, the Cayman Islands Humane Society hosts its Walk & Wag Fun Run, a Grand Cayman event that will raise money and awareness of animals in need. From 7 a.m. to 9:00 a.m., Cayman Islands locals and visitors (furry friends included) will walk, wag and run for a good cause.

 

All of the proceeds of this fun gathering of people and animals benefit the Cayman Islands Humane Society, an organization that has helped shelter, feed and care for abused and homeless animals for more than 43 years.

 

Registration begins at 6:30 a.m. on event day. The price for entry into Walk & Wag Fun Run is CI$25.

 

The Walk & Wag Fun Run on Grand Cayman begins on Safehaven Drive just a short distance from South Bay Beach Club. Join animal loving residents and tourists, athletes and just people pledging their time and money, and support the importance of neutering and spaying to end overpopulation of Cayman Island animals.

 

All pets are welcome at the Walk & Wag Fun Run.

 

About the Cayman Islands Humane Society

 

The Cayman Islands Humane Society formed in February of 1972 when a winter island visitor named Dr. Wallace R. Eagle placed an ad in the Caymanian Weekly. He urged and invited all people interested in forming a humane society to attend a meeting where interested parties would discuss ways to alleviate the suffering of abused and homeless animals.

 

Just 2 days later, roughly 16 locals gathered to begin the groundwork for the launch of the Cayman Islands Humane Society and many others showed interest in helping. Initially, the association was an informal one with membership. In November of 1973, the Cayman Islands Humane Society was incorporated as a non-profit.

 

During the early years of the Society, volunteers boarded animals and some pets stayed at Cheval Ranch for their temporary home. A Thrift Shop opened in 1975, behind the public library in a rent-free building, as a way to earn money for the animals.

 

From 1994 to 1997, the Cayman Islands Humane Society rented premises on North Sound road. When that structure was auctioned off in 1997 under bank foreclosure, the Society was able to buy their space due to large pledges from two primary donors.

 

The Cayman Islands Humane Society today houses 37 dog kennels, a room just for puppies, a surgery room and a recover space. There is also a large cat adoption area, a playroom, and a quarantine space.

Gamers Bay 3: Video Game & Technology Convention

Gamers visiting Grand Cayman this September can participate in and watch Gamers Bay 3, the third annual video gaming tournament and convention in the Cayman Islands.

 

The event takes place on the 29th from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Camana Bay, a lively small town that serves as a gathering spot for locals and tourists. Gamers Bay 3 will be a place for gaming aficionados to show off their talents, connect with other gamers, and watch the best in the industry compete for prizes.

 

A culmination of gaming presentations, exciting activities, and competitive gaming, Gamers Bay 3 is a new type of entertainment on Grand Cayman, and it’s an event that draws young and old.

 

About Gamers Bay 3

 

Gamers Bay 3 is a free opportunity for the public to watch gaming competitions and discuss the top games on the market today. Competitors pay a fee to square off against the best, playing titles like Call of Duty World War II and SUPER SMASH BROS.

 

This event ties into the Cayman Islands’ National Youth Policy on several levels, as it’s a fun opportunity for young people in gaming to gain exposure and build confidence. Today’s gamers create cultural identity and strengthen social bonds through the activity.

 

Gamers Bay events have previously been connected with charitable organizations, including Feed our Future Foundation, whose mission is to end child hunger and support intellectual growth in the Cayman Islands.

 

The last Gamers Bay event, held in October of 2017, had more than 60 competitors and 500 spectators. This year’s event coordinators are looking to increase exposure and participation in the 2018 event and are actively reaching out to gamers between the ages of 16 and 45 in hopes of drawing them into the convention.
