Constitution Day Fireworks, Grand Cayman
On July 4th, Grand Cayman celebrates independence with its American friends. The date marks Constitution Day in the Cayman Islands, a commemoration of the first written Cayman Island constitution approved by London in 1958 and official on July 4th, 1959.
The holiday is a proud time each year for residents on our islands. We get together and revel in freedom and friendship, and enjoy a grand fireworks display in Camana Bay.
This year’s festive Constitution Day celebration in Camana Bay takes place on Monday, July 2, just a couple of days before the actual holiday. From 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at The Crescent in Camana Bay, we will listen to live music, eat great food, play games, win prizes, paint our kids’ faces and watch a spectacular fireworks show.
The Crescent is an open-space that’s our version of a small town center with meeting areas and incredible views of the water into the North Sound. Join us at The Crescent for a free fireworks display and good times. The entertainment will be off the charts and there will be plenty of drinks flowing.
About Constitution Day
Constitution Day in the Cayman Islands celebrates the day when we no longer were a dependency of Jamaica. The Cayman Islands relationship with Jamaica changed once again in 1962 when that country became independent. In 1972, a revised constitution had a profound effect on Cayman and all of its residents.
There would be other constitutional changes over the years, with the Bill of Rights established in 2012 perhaps being the most significant. A public meeting of roughly 500 people led to a spirited discussion and debate that would shape the Bill of Rights and the rights of the Cayman public.
