4 Exclusively Caribbean Adventures On Grand Cayman

The Mar Caribe, or Caribbean Sea, is one of the most unique and beautiful places on earth, filled with sights and phenomena that can be found nowhere else. With a long and colorful history, filled with pirates and war, romance and adventure, and dotted with exotic islands surrounded by crystal clear blue waters and white sand beaches, it’s one of the most visited places in the world. And the Grand Cayman Islands are among the brightest jewels in this tropical paradise.

Every Caribbean destination has its own culture and environment, offering something just a little bit different from its neighbors. Here are four must-see Grand Cayman destinations to consider for your next visit to the Caribbean.

Exclusively Caribbean Adventures On Grand Cayman

Stingray City – Just a short boat ride off of Seven Mile Beach, within the barrier reef, there’s a place where sea life loves to gather, and most especially schools of wild stingrays. Most people think these creatures are dangerous, and in some situations they can be, but for the most part they’re very friendly, and the rays that hang out here are used to swimming with the humans. You can swim and dive with them, and play with and feed them. Back on shore there’s a sea turtle farm that allows you to have the same experience with those curious sea denizens. A truly amazing experience and one that shouldn’t be missed.

Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park – A visit to the Grand Cayman Islands just wouldn’t be complete without taking the opportunity to experience the unique flora and fauna that inhabit the islands, and this park allows you to see it all in one beautiful place. The Queen herself opened this park in 1994. Stroll through gardens filled with native plants and flowers, and watch the antics of the Cayman Blue Iguana, which thrives in this area. Many other birds and animals that live in the islands can be viewed here too.

Cayman Crystal Caves – One of the newest attractions available to visitors is also the oldest geological formation in the islands. Located in the lush jungle of the Northside, these caves were formed from the limestone strata over millions of years, creating huge underground rooms and breathtaking stalactite and stalagmite structures. The caves once served as hideouts for pirates and as hurricane shelters for the inhabitants. The caves are also home to bats, and guano was mined here for fertilizer. Professionally guided tours are available.

Pedro St. James National Historic Site – Back in the 18th century, when commerce and trade to the islands was at its height, a wealthy Englishman built this magnificent three-story mansion. It has been completely restored to its original glory, with period furniture and art. A step back into another age. There are many other attractions on the site to see also.

There are many more exclusively Caribbean adventures on Grand Cayman Islands to be enjoyed. Choose the one that’s right for you and have a wonderful time. That’s what Grand Cayman is all about.

Here are four must-see Grand Cayman destinations to consider for your next visit to the Caribbean.

Which Caribbean destination is your personality?

It is easy to see why countless people from all over the world are drawn to the different destinations in the Caribbean. Enjoy the crystal clear azure color of the Caribbean sea, and the smell of the salty air.  Experience the calming feel of soft breezes emanating from trade winds that cool the tropical air. They  are powerful enough to lure anyone away from a busy city, or a remote rural town, as they dream of basking in the radiant sunshine of a tropical paradise.

How is it possible for one tropical Caribbean paradise to fit a variety of personality types? It is when the location is one that offers so many different amenities that the sheer variety of things to do, activities to enjoy, and the variety of exceptional tropical and native Caribbean dining choices and entertainment to experience all come together on the three islands that make up the British Dependent Territory known as the Cayman Islands.

The Adventurer

If you are looking for a destination that will allow you to spread your adventurous wings on or in the water, the Cayman Islands will let you explore everything. You’ll find an array of unique diving experiences that include marine habitats that have developed in the remains of sunken ships or surveillance vessels, the chance to snorkel with Stingrays, some of the world’s best reefs to explore and much more.

Water Sports

Whether you want to swim in a heated pool near the ocean, or in the Caribbean Sea, explore the salty water along the Seven Mile Beach via a kayak, a parasail, or a sailboat, you can do all of that and more when you visit the Cayman Islands.

The Beach Bum

Can you imagine a more spectacular place to be a beach bum than on the southern edge of the world-famous Seven Mile Beach on Grand Cayman Island? Inhale the salty air as you chase away the stresses of a chaotic life, relaxing on a beach with the whitest sand you’ve ever seen. This is the life that visitors of the Cayman Islands enjoy every day as long as they’re there.

Family Friendly Accommodations That Encourage Family Togetherness

Stay in a villa that gives you access to amenities like a pool and fitness center, but that also offers the flexibility you can only get when you’re not bound to a meal or activity schedule. Work out in a fitness center or swim in heated pool. Wade in the ocean and gaze at fish.

Romantic Horseback Riding Along the Beach

What can be more romantic than a horseback ride along the crystal clear turquoise blue Caribbean Sea? Nothing, unless you’re enjoying that ride as the sun comes up or starts to go down. The color of the sky is changing, and the reflection of those colors on the water is a sight like nothing you’ve ever seen.

If you enjoy golfing, then the Cayman Islands will give you a one-of-a-kind golf experience as you play on what will arguably be the most beautiful golf course you’ve ever seen. The mild Caribbean climate is ideal for the type of grass that grows there. The lush green carpet looks as luxurious as it feels.

No matter what type of personality you have, there are so many things to do and see, places to go, new foods and drinks to experience, that you’ll never wonder where to go when you’re planning your dream vacation again. The Cayman Islands offers something for everyone, no matter how young or old they are.

Dive one of the worlds most spectacular underwater worlds

Grand Cayman is known for many things, so it’s not surprising that it’s one of the most desirable vacation destinations for people who want to escape the adverse weather, active schedules, and most of all, the hustle and bustle of the city, suburban or a chaotic life that never slows down. The pristine white sand that covers the famous seven-mile beach is a destination that draws beach lovers from all over the world. The Cayman Islands offer some of the Caribbean’s best scuba diving and snorkeling opportunities, with a range of diving locations and depths that are suitable for everyone from first-time divers to experienced scuba enthusiasts. Each island has unique diving venues that allow divers to experience every type of marine, plant and invertebrate life that lives in the calm, warm waters surrounding all of the islands.

Popular Diving and Snorkeling Sites in Grand Cayman

Snorkeling at Stingray City

Stingray City gets its name from the fleet of southern stingray fish who hang out close enough to the shore that people can look at the clear azure-colored water below as a group of two dozen fearless and friendly stingrays swim around them. Though not domesticated, these majestic looking fish have adjusted to the presence of people, so they aren’t afraid.

Kittiwake

Kittiwake lies 15 feet below the water’s surface at a depth of 64 feet. The former Chanticleer Class Submarine Rescue Ship was actively used between 1945 and 1994. One of its most heroic rescue missions involved assisting the U.S. Coast Guard and other branches of the U.S. military in recovering the Space Shuttle Challenger after the tragic explosion.

It’s trip to the Cayman Islands was an eventful and perilous one that took 9-days as the ship that towed it traveled through a dangerous ice storm. In a ceremonial tribute that included a three canon-salute, the Kittiwake bade farewell to the world as it sank to the bottom of the sea, soon to become a marine habitat for a variety of unusual and colorful creatures who make their home at the Northernmost tip of Seven Mile Beach. Divers can swim through the five decks, enjoying the site (without touching anything) of rare and colorful sea sponges, squirrelfish, sea urchins, and Goliath groupers.

Diving Sites in Cayman Brac

The newest diving attraction in Cayman Brac is the Russian-built ship that was formerly a Cuban naval frigate. The 330-foot vessel known as the M/V Captain Keith Tibbetts sank off of the Northwest Coast of Cayman Brac in September of 1996. In the time since it sank, it has already become a habitat for a variety of marine life that enjoys the waters off the coast of Cayman Brac. The M/V Captain Keith Tibbetts is the largest of three dive wrecks that sank off the coast of Cayman Brac.

World-Class Diving Sites in Little Cayman

This island may be known as Little Cayman, but don’t let its name fool you. It is legendary among the world’s diving destinations for some of the most breathtakingly beautiful underwater marine life and coral gardens found anywhere. At Jackson Point and Bloody Bay wall in the  Bloody Bay Marine Park, visitors will be awestruck at the site of a sheer coral wall that starts at 20 feet below the surface and plunges to an extraordinary depth of 6,000 feet. The diving site features a huge variety of tropical fish, sea plumes that waver with the water’s moving current, and gorgeous underwater coral gardens.

The mild year-round air and water temperatures, world-class beaches, the variety of water sports and activities along with luxury accommodations and amenities make the Cayman Islands an ideal destination for a family vacation or a romantic honeymoon.

Golf Courses in Grand Cayman Are Waiting for You

Grand Cayman Island, located just south Cuba and about a 90-minute flight from Miami, is the largest of the Cayman Islands. While the island is best known for its sparkling Seven Mile Beach, its delicious turtle soup recipes and its excellent snorkeling and diving opportunities, Grand Cayman is also home to a number of challenging and scenic golf courses. If you’re headed to the Cayman Islands this season, make sure to allow a little time to test your golf skills on one of these island courses.

Best places to play golf on Grand Cayman Island

There are three primary  golf resorts on Grand Cayman Island, each with its own unique style and challenges.

  1. Britannia Golf Club. Located along Seven Mile Beach at the Grand Cayman Beach Suites (formerly the Hyatt Beach Suites), the courses at the Britannia Golf Club were designed by Jack Nicklaus and include a nine-hold championship course and an 18-hole, par 57 executive course. The setting here is lovely and the courses feature a number of natural water hazards including the spectacular 5th hole on the championship course, where your tee shot must carry over a portion of the Caribbean Sea. Amenities at the Britannia Golf Club include a bar and grill and a pro shop.
  2. North Sound Golf Course. The only 18-hole championship golf course on Grand Cayman Island, the par 71, 6,605-yard North Sound Golf Course features water views, coconut palms, iguanas and those challenging Tradewinds that always keep play interesting. Amenities at the North Sound Golf Club include a full service practice facility, an open-air bar and a pro shop.
  3. Blue Tips Golf Course. Located at the Ritz Carlton resort, this nine-hole, Greg Norman-designed course hugs the Caribbean coast.  This course is reserved exclusively for Ritz Carlton guests and residents, but it might be worth staying at this Seven Mile Beach resort in order to play the challenging course. Amenities and services here include a golf shop, a caddie concierge program and a 19th hole bar and grill. This course also offers a program to encourage young golfers. Those age 15 and younger can play for free during non-peak times in the afternoon when they are accompanied by a (paying) adult. Children can also get free golf instruction at the course pro shop.

To make the most of your Grand Cayman golf experience, it’s a good idea to book your round during the week, when the courses are less crowded. Many courses also offer discounts to resort guests and all provide rental equipment, so you don’t have to lug your clubs with you on vacation. It’s also important to reserve your tee times as far in advance as possible to avoid disappointment. This is especially true during the peak season between December 15 and April 15.

Grand Cayman: Hike one of the Last Remaining Subtropical Forests

A beach vacation generally means you’ll be spending a lot of time on, well, beaches, but a trip to the Cayman Islands provides an opportunity for so much more than lounging around with your toes in the sand and an umbrella-topped drink in your hands (not that there’s anything wrong with that). With lush green terrain and an incredible array of wildlife, Grand Cayman offers one of the last dry, subtropical forests in the Caribbean, and it’s the perfect place for a nice, long hike.

Grand Cayman Forests: Green, Unspoiled, and Breathtaking

The flora and fauna that make up the Cayman Islands’ forests are stunningly diverse. The star is undoubtedly the Silver Thatch Palm, the iconic palm with metallic leaves that covers the island and is also, unsurprisingly, the national tree. Then there are the mangrove trees, with roots that tangle up from the water and play home to a variety of wildlife, and the beautiful wild banana orchids, with yellow trumpeted petals and purple-tinged tips.

Up Close with Grand Cayman Wildlife

Some incredible animals call this forest home, too: the brightly colored Cayman Parrot is the national bird of the Cayman Islands, and there’s also the biggest colony of red-footed boobies – an aptly named seabird with bright red feet and a blue bill – in the Western Hemisphere. Add to that a slew of other birds, bats, turtles, butterflies, snakes, iguanas (including the Blue Iguana, a native species that’s also endangered), and rabbit-sized rodents, and it’s easy to see that Grand Cayman is a veritable cornucopia of wildlife that you simply don’t want to miss.

The Mastic Trail

The Mastic Trail on Grand Cayman brings all the best elements of outdoor life on the island together for one incredible hike. Meander along the 200-year-old path and the terrain morphs from forest to grassy expanses to rocky outcrops to the mangrove-covered swamps you’d probably expect from a tropical jungle. The soundtrack is captivating; all around you, birds are celebrating your arrival with chirps and bellows that are as exotic as the fruit-laden trees they’re perched upon. Take advantage of a guided tour or head out on your own and soak up the atmosphere at your own pace.

Beyond Grand Cayman

Venture beyond the shores of Grand Cayman and more beauty awaits. Head out to Little Cayman for the day, and you’ll find unspoiled coastline dotted with hidden beaches perfect for an afternoon siesta or leisurely picnic. Inland, hikers will discover wetlands, lagoons, and the Boob Pond Nature Reserve, absolute heaven for dedicated bird watchers. Thrill-seekers will love exploring the 140-ft bluff, or “Brac,” that gives Cayman Brac its name. Some 14 square miles of spectacular scenery awaits, and if you need to get just a little bit higher, you can hike to the bluff’s lighthouse and survey the watery expanse that way.

Whether you love the great outdoors or just want to get a peek at greenery that looks a little different than your backyard at home, hiking the Cayman Islands deserves a spot on your bucket list.

Extreme Cayman Adventures

Winter’s nearly over, and if you’re looking forward to a first class tropical vacation with tons of extreme sports, South Bay Beach Club has got what you’re looking for on the warm and crystalline waters at Grand Cayman Islands.

Extreme Sports in the Water

Let the local adventure experts at South Bay Beach Club show you the adventure you’ve been craving with the whole range of extreme tropical water sports. Hit the beach for surfing or twist up the curl kite surfing. If you prefer motor powered water sports, try making wakes with a jet ski or wave runner. Para-sailing is an amazing way to take in the view while flying behind a speed boat. For those with a curious streak, snorkeling and scuba diving are great ways to explore the tropical surf and encounter that thousands of colorful creatures beneath it. Of course, not all extreme water sports have to be new- there’s always body-boarding or canoeing, for a more familiar thrill.

Over the Water

For those who would like to get out of the water, well out of it, wing suit skydiving is about as exciting as it gets. Drop from a few thousand feet and literally fly over the islands and the bay. If you’ve got a strong neck and enjoy the feeling of raw excitement, bungee jumping may be the thing. If you just want to feel the whoosh of the air and see the Earth rushing up to meet you, traditional skydiving is nothing to sneeze at.

On the Land

Those with an affinity for cardiovascular fitness may go for trail running- and there may be no better place on Earth for it. Mountain biking is an excellent way to explore the island as well as a great way to experience trails. Rock climbing is a big deal on these islands with many opportunities to test your grip and your resolve in this beautiful tropical paradise. Cave diving and exploration are sports that can be incorporated with just about any other kind on the Cayman Islands as these locations are riddled with complex networks of caves.

The South Bay Beach Club can arrange an activity package with any of these activities and more for your Spring or Summer vacation. They offer a range of non-extreme sports for when you just need to catch your breath. There’s horse riding along pristine beaches, sailboating, golf, and much more to fill out your tropical get away.

The South Bay Beach Club is nestled in the world-renowned Seven Mile Beach with a host of first class villas, restaurants and a whole range of amenities to make your get away event one that you will not soon forget.

Animals in the Caribbean

Surrounded by the picturesque Caribbean Sea, Grand Cayman Island offers great opportunities to observe sea life like octopus, sponges, eels and beautiful coral reefs.  But the delightful fauna of the island doesn’t stop at the shoreline.

Birds

As a popular migratory stopover for non-water birds, Grand Cayman hosts many non-indigenous species during the winter. Among the bird species endemic to the island are the Caribbean dove, the West Indian woodpecker and the Grand Cayman parrot. A subspecies of the Cuban Amazon parrot that likely arrived when sea levels were lower and the trip between the islands easier, the Grand Cayman parrot is found only here. Its numbers are estimated to be less than 4,500, making its situation “dire.”

Snakes, Amphibians and Reptiles

All snakes on Grand Cayman are non-venomous, although some can be as long as five feet or use a threatening pose when startled. The Cayman Racer snake is named for its propensity to quickly slither away when approached.

The Greenhouse frog and the Cuban tree frog can be observed at the island’s Botanic Park in addition to their natural habitats around Grand Cayman. The Cuban tree frog, also called the bullfrog, is more common and found near fresh water sources.

Another popular resident of the Botanic Park is the Grand Cayman Blue Iguana, the island’s largest native land animal, reaching up to five feet and 25 pounds. From an estimate of just a dozen left in 2002, an intense recovery program has brought their numbers back over 700. Habitat destruction, road kills and hunting by non-native, invasive species have made this the most endangered iguana on the planet.

Although turtles used to be the majority residents on Grand Cayman, overfishing diminished their population drastically until a conservation effort replenished their numbers. A tortoise known as a hickatee lives among Grand Cayman’s fresh water ponds.

Bats and Others

Like snakes, the bats found on Grand Cayman are harmless to humans. The brown bat, a very rare species, is found nowhere else on earth but Grand Cayman.

Agoutis, shy rodents known locally as rabbits, were brought to the island for rat control. However, the two species operate at different times of day, ironically leaving the diurnal agoutis to hunt snakes, rats’ natural predator.

So, while enjoying the diving and snorkeling off Grand Cayman, don’t forget to visit the diverse and somewhat rare land animals the island has to offer.

Nightlife in Grand Cayman

In Grand Cayman, your days are spent on the beach – snorkeling, playing in the water, and just enjoying the sun. You might relax with drinks, or spend the day shopping. That doesn’t mean your day needs to end when the sun goes down. Grand Cayman has a fantastic array of nightlife to suit any mood. Whether you want an upscale restaurant with specialty drinks, a loud nightclub, live entertainment, or a small dive bar where you can relax without worrying about your wardrobe, you can find it here.

Beach Bars

Of course, there’s no shortage of beach bars on Grand Cayman. If you’re in the mood to take your libations with full view of the beautiful water, these are some great spots to try:

  • Coconut Joe’s. This is a great outdoor restaurant and bar. Sit outside and enjoy the scenery with great food and a beer or watch the fantastic entertainment they regularly offer.
  • Kaibo Beach Bar & Grill. This one should have two entries. Kaibo offers a beach bar that’s stupendous for the location and great food. They also have an indoor upstairs restaurant, if you actually want to put on shoes and get dressed for a fancier experience.

Night Clubs

The islands certainly offer the atmosphere for relaxation but that doesn’t mean they skimp on the nightlife. There are a number of options available if you’re looking for a rollicking good time:

  • O Bar. This nightclub is one of the most popular in the area. They feature great music, large dance floors, and an experience on par with any highly rated nightclub in a big city.
  • Legendz. This is the place to be if you want a little entertainment with your nightlife. Legendz serves good food and excellent drinks, but they’re known for the fabulous entertainment – local bands, DJ’s, and even comedians perform here to the delight of the patrons.

A Little Home Away From Home

There are many beach bars with the island ambiance all around them. If you’re looking for something a little more reminiscent of your favorite pubs back home, these might fit the bill:

  • Triple Crown Pub. This traditional styled pub is modeled after the ones you might find in Ireland or Britain, with all of the camaraderie and great warmth.
  • Hammerheads Brew Pub Bar. This bar and restaurant boasts its own micro brewery and offers some fantastic food.

Saturday Mornings at Rum Point

Whether you’re just kicking off your Grand Cayman adventure or making that last day on the island really count, there’s nothing more enticing than Saturday morning at Rum Point.

One of the most invigorating ways to start your tropical Saturday is a dip in the pool or ocean. Of course, South Bay Beach Club’s exclusive pool is ideal for swimming and sunbathing, as is our scenic section of Seven Mile Beach. This beach, one of the most famous in all of the Caribbean, is renowned for its coral sand and clear water.

Other options for sun, sand and surf include Rum Point Beach, which features shallow water perfect for children to swim in, along with volleyball nets, convenient changing rooms and charming huts.

If you’re yearning to start your day with even more adventurous seaside fun, check out Rum Point’s many other water activities. Experience coral reefs and aquatic life at close range by snorkeling at the famous sandbar area known as Stingray City — where you can actually pet the friendly, non-venomous creatures.

Local outfitters also offer floating toys, rafts and other water crafts like paddle boats, sailboats, stand-up paddle boards, banana boats and kayaks. Alternatively, take guided trips on glass-bottom boats, or book an early fishing excursion.

For a Saturday morning adventure you’ll never forget, go horseback riding on the beach. You can arrange to be picked up right from your villa, then taken on either a ride along the beach, or an extra-special “ride and swim” adventure.

If golfing is more your thing, you’re just a tee’s throw from the North Sound Club, the only 18-hole, champion-level golf course in the region.

And for a true adrenaline-rush to kick start your Saturday, go on a morning helicopter ride. A helipad is available right on Seven Mile Beach for a tour of the scenic shoreline from above. Longer rides featuring the entire island are also available.

Of course, breakfast by the water is always a great way to start the day. Our concierge service can help you set up a balcony feast with the perfect view. You’ll also find plenty of cafes and eat-in bakeries nearby in Rum Point, along with other seaside eateries serving Saturday morning breakfast.

Round out your morning with some duty-free shopping. Everything from exotic clothing, Caribbean artwork and diamonds are sold in boutiques, and even vendor huts along Seven Mile Beach. As you might imagine, rum (along with other spirits) is also sold at Rum Point.

10 Great Things About Visiting the Grand Cayman

Ordinarily, visiting one of the most important banking destinations in the world would not seem like a great getaway.  Ordinarily you might not be thinking about the Grand Cayman Islands.  Despite its notoriety as a major banking and business location, this is a tropical paradise.

  1. Stingray City:  How many people do you know who can say they have been able to get in the water to pet a stingray?  How about to pet dozens of stingrays?   You can at Stingray City.
  2. Snorkeling in the Grand Cayman Islands is one of life’s treasures.  With reefs, wildlife, and absolutely beautiful clear water, there are many dive shops to choose from, whether you want to stick close to land or go to beautiful isolated spots.
  3. Seven Mile Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in the world.  If you’ve never walked on sand that feels like flour, this beach will blow your mind.  The entire stretch of this beach is public.

  5. The Cayman Turtle Farm shows how the natives help take care of nature.  This facility lets visitors learn about turtles, caiman, birds, and many other animals.
  6. Mastic Reserve is another way that the flora and fauna of Grand Cayman is protected.  This reserve protects an area of the subtropical forest that otherwise would be disappearing through deforestation.  This three kilometer long trail lets visitors walk along the shore and through a dry forest.
  7. Camana Bay offers you a chance to do some shopping and people watching while you’re visiting the island.  Hop on a bike or take a stroll, the shopping here would fit in at some of the best shopping experiences around the world.
  8. Q.E. II Botanic Park is an opportunity to see some of the most beautiful wild orchids in the world, along with many other memorable and colorful flowers.  You can also see wild iguanas, and maybe snakes, and turtles too.
  9. Pedro St. James is a national historic site which houses a restored 18th century plantation house.  This house has historic significance because it was here that in 1831 the decision was made to make the Cayman Islands a democracy with an elected parliament.
  10. Hell is a town sitting amongst black rock formations that do not appear very hospitable.  Alas, there is a comfortable boardwalk as you wander through Hell looking for just the right souvenir to remember your visit to. . .well, you know.

The Grand Cayman Islands are more than just beaches to sit on and drink fruity drinks.  Although that is there too.  No matter what you choose to do when you visit, you will have a great time.

Grand Cayman is home to one of the most beautiful and well-known beaches in the world: 7 Mile Beach.  It is a place where time stands still and conch is the catch of the day.  If you are visiting Grand Cayman in search of clear aqua blue waters, soft white sand, and soca music, you will not be disappointed.  But Grand Cayman has more to offer families than just languishing in the sun.  Try these activities during your stay:

  • The Jolly Roger Pirate Experience – Have you ever wondered what being on a pirate ship might be like?  Find out in Grand Cayman!  Enjoy a sword fighting, swashbuckling pirate show in the Caribbean.

These gentle giants are incredibly friendly and love to be fed.  A visit to Stingray City is only a sensory experience that you will not soon forget.
  • Swim with the dolphins – Dolphin Cove and Dolphin Discovery offer the opportunity for you to swim with the dolphins.  The perfect excursion for children of all ages, the parks both have other opportunities to see exotic wildlife and sea life in lieu of swimming.
  • See Grand Cayman by helicopter – Children and parents alike will enjoy soaring above the beaches and mangroves below to see the island in a unique way.
  • Snorkel at Rum Point – Enjoy some of the most shallow and clear water on the island.

The History of Seven Mile Beach

Called one of the best beaches in the Caribbean by “Travel + Leisure” magazine as well as “U S News and World Report,” Seven Mile Beach (also known as West bay Beach) sits on the west side of Grand Cayman Island. This 6.3-mile continuous stretch of sand (despite its name) is one of the most developed areas of the island and home to many of the resort destination’s top hotels.

The History of Seven Mile Beach

Grand Cayman Island and Seven Mile Beach were originally home to the Carib tribe. Christopher Columbus and his crew brought Europeans to the island’s shores in 1503 on his fourth voyage to the New World. Subsequent slavery and the introduction of European diseases for which the native tribe had little immunity erased the indigenous population. All that remains today is the lovely topography of the islands and the name, Cayman, which is derived from the Carib word for “crocodile.”

The Cayman Islands were ruled by Jamaica between 1863 and 1962. When Jamaica won her independence from Britain in 1962, the Cayman Islands elected to remain a protectorate of the United Kingdom. A governor administers the island nation today.

The structure of Seven Mile Beach continues to evolve and the stretch loses a little bit in length each year to erosion. Still, the beach is one of the most lovely and most beguiling in the region. Seven Mile Beach is known for its colorful coral reefs just offshore and the excellent snorkeling and diving found there. As with

all beaches in the Cayman Islands, access is open to the public. In addition to the many luxury hotels, the beach is home to multiple seaside restaurants.

To book your own idyllic vacation along Grand Cayman’s Seven Mile Beach, contact South Bay Beach Club at soutbaybeachclub.com or by calling 407 992-2844.

The Ten Day Pirate Festival

Each year, from mid- to late November, the Cayman Islands are overrun by pirates. There’s plenty of debauchery as boatloads of scruffy seagoers with eye patches, poor drinking habits and a tendency to break out in inventive songs kick off their arrival by staging a daring kidnapping of the island’s governor. Ten days of pure fun, excitement and celebration follow in the largest festival in the country. Each year this annual event draws upwards of 35,000 as they come out to cheer, celebrate, eat, drink and be entertained.

The 2016 Ten Day Pirate Festival

For 34 years, the Caribbean has celebrated its unique cultural heritage and pirate legends by hosting a variety of events, and it just keeps getting better every year. In 2016, the Ten Day Pirate Festival — which is scheduled to run from November 10 to November 20 — will encompass some 32 events. Each district will host its own Heritage Days that will pay homage to their unique — yet intertwined — history and similarities. Other events include numerous parades, happy hours, costume contests, parties and much more scattered throughout all three of the Caribbean islands.

Schedule of Events

The Ten Day Pirate Festival is a family event that features a number of activities and celebrations aimed at both adults-only and families. This balanced combination is one of the things that make this festival so popular. Some events that visitors and residents alike can look forward to in addition to the landing of the pirates are a huge fireworks display that explodes in bright and festive lights over historic George Town. Afterwards, the Songfest, situated near the alluring lull and beauty of the sea beckon you to join in. Or enjoy the pulsating beats of Caribbean bands while you get your groove on until the early hours of the morning.

Other activities that are scheduled to occur throughout the festival include a cardboard boat race, children’s fair, underwater treasure hunt, golf tournaments, swimming races and road races. Street dances encourage visitors and locals alike to join in all the festivity and fun. As the festival nears its end, the locals overthrow the invading pirates and they are tried and sentenced. A pageant, night parade, fireworks and street dance follow.

Make plans now to attend the Ten Day Pirate Festival in 2016. Be sure to book early for the best selection in lodging and activities.

The World’s Best Place to Get a Yes!

If you’ve been considering “popping” the question, you know how important choosing just the right setting can be. Ideally, you want a place that’s quiet enough for you and you’re intended to have a little privacy. You want a memorable setting that you’ll still remember fondly, even when your grandchildren are grown. And, you want a place that you can get to without spending a crazy amount of time and money (and risk spoiling the surprise.) Grand Cayman Island, in the heart of the Caribbean Seas, fits all of those requirements.

Grand Cayman Island–A Romantic Paradise

Grand Cayman Island, located just 90 minutes by air from south Florida, offers a relaxed Caribbean atmosphere, one of the world’s top sand beaches, delicious seafood, sparkling sunsets and those lilting island rhythms. In short, it’s an idyllic place to propose. Whether you get down on one knee along Seven Mile Beach, share a Champagne toast while watching the sunset on the balcony of your condo, or opt for something more extreme like proposing under water on a dive trip or while swimming with the dolphins, getting engaged on Grand Cayman Island is an experience the two of you will treasure for a lifetime.

Enjoying Grand Cayman

You’ll also want to savor the romantic atmosphere of Grand Cayman during the days after your future spouse says “yes.” The island is known for its world-class diving and snorkeling along colorful, off-shore coral reefs. You can also swim with stingrays, dolphins and other marine life at Stingray City or tour historic 18th-century plantation houses and forts. Grand Cayman was also a famous pirate hang-out in the 18th century and the island celebrates that heritage each November with its Pirates Week festivities. Of course, no trip to the island would be complete without sampling some of the native cuisine, such as turtle stew, jerk chicken and spiny Caribbean lobsters pulled fresh from the sea.

The History of Pirates Week on the Grand Cayman Island

Each November, Grand Cayman Island transforms itself into a 17th century pirate encampment as it celebrates the island’s heritage of pirate legends and lore. The festivities at the 11-day Pirates Week event include mock “invasions,” parades, costume contests, food and drink specials at local restaurants and treasure hunts.

About Pirates Week

Although the Cayman Islands were first found by Europeans when Christopher Columbus set anchor there in 1503 on his fourth journey to the New World, the islands did not “belong” to any country until they were ceded to Britain in 1670. This made the three-island chain an ideal haven for pirates and buccaneers. The golden age of piracy in the islands spanned from the 1650s to the 1730s and some of the most notorious pirates of that age, including Edward Teach (aka Blackbeard), Lowther, Lowe and Morgan, called the Cayman Islands home. In addition to the lack of organized government, the abundance of turtles for food, small coves for hiding ships and treasure, and the general lack of other inhabitants make the islands attractive to pirates. Though the pirate era lasted less than 100 years, it has captured the imagination of generations of Cayman residents and visitors alike.

In 1978, the Cayman Islands Tourist and Visitors Bureau launched the Pirates Week festival as a way to draw more tourists to the islands. A few years later, the popularity of the “Pirates of the Caribbean” movies helped to bolster interest in the event. Today, Pirates Week, now in its 38th season, draws more than 35,000 visitors to the Cayman Islands each year. It is the islands’ largest celebration.

To be a part of Pirates Week this year and stay along Grand Cayman’s Seven Mile Beach, contact South Bay Beach Club at soutbaybeachclub.com or by calling 407-992-2844.

What You Need to Know About the Wreck of the Ten Sail

Grand Cayman Island boasts a colorful history, but perhaps the most infamous event occurred in the wee hours of the morning on February 8th, 1794. The Wreck of the Ten Sail refers to a convoy of ten ships that were lost when they crashed upon the rocky reef on the east end of the island.

The convoy consisted of six merchant ships sailing from Jamaica to Britain, three ships bound for the United States, and the newly christened British naval frigate, the HMS Convert. The Convert was captained by John Lawford, a veteran sailor charged with protecting the merchant ships.

Lawford went to bed on February 7th thinking the convoy was already past Grand Cayman Island. He awoke at 3 am to a disastrous scene. A distress gun had been fired, and the breakers were unavoidably close. Lawford gave orders for the convoy to disperse, but it was too late. All ten ships were lost on the reef. Villagers living nearby immediately came to the aid of the shipwrecked crew, saving the lives of more than 400 people. Despite their best efforts, eight lives were lost to the sea.

A famous and oft-proclaimed legend tells of a royal prince, the son of Britain’s King George III, being rescued from the wreckage that fateful night. According to the legend, when the king heard the news of his son’s rescue, he immediately decreed that the Cayman Islands would forever be free from war conscription and all taxes. While there’s no proof that any of this ever happened, the story is told as fact, and tax-free living is embraced throughout the islands.

Visiting the Wreck of the Ten Sails Park

The park overlooking the site of the shipwreck is perched on a craggy bluff with beautiful views of the ocean and reef, as well as the remains of more recent shipwrecks. Historical markers document the details of the event, and there is a memorial plaque along the shore, dedicated by Queen Elizabeth II on the 200th anniversary of the event. It’s free to visit the park, which is located  in the East End of Grand Cayman Island.

The Wreck of the Ten Sail is is just one of the intriguing sites you can visit in the East End. The area is known for quiet waters, sandy beaches, and natural beauty. It’s a perfect day trip from the South Bay Beach Club.

Planning The Ultimate Cayman Islands Destination Wedding

Getting married along the turquoise water and soft white sand of a Caribbean beach is the stuff about which fantasies are made. However, a destination wedding offers a number of advantages. It helps to keep your wedding small and personal. Your close friends and family get to share your beautiful wedding with you in a place they may not have visited before, and you don’t have to fly off to your honeymoon right after the reception. You’re already there.

Planning a destination wedding

A destination wedding in Grand Cayman is easy to plan. The designated wedding planners at South Bay Beach Club can help coordinate all of the details, from booking an officiant to selecting the right tropical flowers to make your ceremony special and elegant to finding a DJ to spin the tunes all night at your reception. Of course, our resort will also help you with the food and beverage for your reception and rehearsal dinner.

Getting married on Grand Cayman island is easy. There’s no mandatory waiting period like you’ll find on other islands. You simply need to obtain a non-resident marriage license (obtainable for a $250 fee from the Passport and Corporate Services Office) and a letter from the person who will be officiating at the wedding. To get the license, you’ll need to show your passport and documentation to prove that any previous marriage(s) are no longer legally-valid (death certificate or divorce decree.) Again, your designated wedding planner can assist you with these details.

The final piece of planning your destination wedding is to reserve rooms for you and your wedding party. Depending on how many will be staying with us, we can often offer a discount or upgrade on rooms.

To book your own destination wedding along Grand Cayman’s Seven Mile Beach, contact South Bay Beach Club at soutbaybeachclub.com or by calling 407-992-2844.

The Five Best Restaurants to Try in Grand Cayman Island

Sure, you go to Grand Cayman Island for lots of great reasons, to lounge on the warm and lovely white sand beaches, swim, snorkel, fish, and boat in the crystal clear blue waters, relax in the luxurious resorts and hotels, and enjoy the native flora, fauna, and culture. Not to mention the vibrant night life.

But if you’re like most people, visiting Grand Cayman to sample the cuisine is probably at the bottom of your list, an afterthought, if it’s there at all. And that’s a shame, because the island has a reputation for some of the best Caribbean cuisine to be found in those waters, at least among foodies.

As a matter of fact, the food should get top billing, right after the beaches. But find out for yourself. Here are five of the best gastronomic experiences that Grand Cayman has to offer.

  • The Cracked Conch – A popular local destination for over 34 years, the Cracked Conch is located on the waterfront on the North West Point of West Bay, and offers some of the most breathtaking views of the ocean to be found anywhere on the island. It specializes in seafood, Caribbean, and International fare, enjoyed in an atmosphere of island chic, with several spacious outside patios. Prices are affordable, with main dinner courses available from $32-$46. Recommended is the Seared Local Snapper, with chorizo and tomato vinaigrette.
  • Calypso Grill – Sited on Morgan’s Harbour, the Calypso Grill is a cozy option with a delightful contemporary and island decor. Watch the boats sail in and out of the bay as you enjoy the Wahoo Escoveitch, deep-fried wahoo served with Jamaican hot peppers and onion vinaigrette.
  • The Brasserie – This George Town eatery just might offer the freshest ingredients around, as it keeps two of the local fishermen on the payroll to supply daily fresh fish, and grows its own vegetables and herbs, as well as breadfruit and banana trees. Prices are low to moderate, and you should try any of the daily catch grilled over hardwood coals.
  • Catch – One of Morgan Harbour’s newest establishments, opened in 2014, it has an excellent waterfront setting with great views and outdoor dining, and a lounge that’s already gaining a reputation for serving up some of the best cocktails in the area. Prices run low moderate, and one of the house specialties is the Grilled Mahi Mahi at $28 for dinner, served with onion and pepper cous cous, roasted corn, chimichurri, and a selection of organic locally grown vegetables.
  • Morgan’s – Located at the recently renovated Cayman Islands Yacht Club, this restaurant features large, open dining areas and an outdoor patio with views of Governor’s Creek and the local yacht fleet. Known for fresh daily seafood, the prices range from low to moderate. Any of their catch of the day entrees will be a winner, but make sure to try the Thai Seafood Curry, a spicy mix of shrimp, mussels, and scallops.

The comeback of the Blue Iguanas

Who They Are
Too unique and intelligent to qualify as mere things, the Grand Cayman Island’s Blue Iguanas are fascinating. Even for the Caribbean — where bright colored flowers, fish, reptiles and birds are almost common-place, — the Blue Iguana is a distinct species. With metallic blue skin and thorny dorsal spines, the five-foot lizard has a fantastical, computer-generated appearance, the possibility of extinction for the Grand Cayman resident became a distinct possibility in the late 1990s.
A result of human activities encroaching on the natural habitat of the Blue Iguana, numbers fell to a staggeringly low counts by 2002. Cats and dogs; non-native bird and snake species; and vehicles were responsible for a large sum of the depopulation. While adult Blue Iguana are hardy animals with the ability to defend themselves from most preditors, the smaller juvanile Blue Iguana are very susceptible. Likewise, adult Blue Iguana are no match for cars. Unfortunately, the heat captured by the pavement of roads and highways attract iguanas which leads to a large number of vehicular fatalities.
Blue Iguana Conservation Efforts
Noticing the declining numbers of Blue Iguana in the 80s and 90s, the Wildlife Conservation Society took it upon themselves to begin a captive breeding program, but its efforts were almost too late. By the time the program was ready to begin breeding the reptiles in captivity, Blue Iguana numbers had already fallen to below 15 in the wild. Fortunately, the program has been highly successful and Blue Iguana numbers are already back above 900.
Additionally, conservation areas have been set aside for the Blue Iguana. With reserves around the island that permit the lizards to live free of human influence in their natural habitat, conservation experts believe that the wild Blue Iguana is now here to stay.
Blue Iguana in Captivity
Surviving well in the wild, Blue Iguana are also becoming increasingly popular as pets. Because of their size, the Blue Iguana is not the reptile for everyone, but those people with enough space to house them find the animal to be a wonderful addition to the home. Bright and intuitive for reptiles, the Blue Iguana takes great interest in the activities of their owners, following them with their turquoise-blue-colored eyes.
Best kept outside, a pen for a Blue Iguana requires the fence be buried at least two feet into the ground because — like most legged reptiles — they are proficient diggers. Blue Iguanas have hardy appetites and are ferocious eaters preferring to feast in the morning before temperatures get too hot. They are primarily herbivores, eating leafy greens and vegetables, but they will also eat carrion when it is offered. However, unlike some other large lizards, they are not hunters.
A single Blue Iguana or a pair work best. Mixing two males is a particularly bad idea because they have a tendency to fight which leads to heavy scaring and unhealthy animals.

Explore The Beaches On The Cayman Islands

A beach is not just a beach in the Cayman Islands. Each one of the Cayman beaches has a unique experience to offer you. All you have to do is decide which experience you want to have most. Following are a few of the most popular beaches on each of the Cayman Islands.

Grand Cayman Beaches

Rum Point has a nice, inviting sandy beach. It is a great place to go swimming and lounge for the day. The drawback is that it can be quite congested because the crowds from the cruise ships often make their way to it as well.

If you have a full day, and would like to go where the action is, then the Seven Mile Beach offers you access to restaurants and bars, plus the ability to take part in water activities, such as parasailing. You will also find it easy to find your own little section of beach to relax and enjoy the calm water.

If privacy is your biggest concern, then Smith Cove is your best choice. Many people believe it is the best snorkel spot on the whole island. It is also a great place for taking some beautiful vacation photos.

Cayman Brac Beaches

The Brac Reef Beach is a great place to go for everyone. If you feel like doing some activities, you can snorkel, dive, fish, kayak, and more; however, if you feel like relaxing, there are picnic tables and hammocks where you can rest and relax. This is a great spot for a larger group with individuals who have different ideas of fun at the beach. Everyone can do their own thing!

Carib Sands offers you the services of a vacation resort with the ability to dive, fish, snorkel, and relax. You will find that everything you need is within walking distance from the beach, including a restaurant, supermarket, and even a car rental dealership if you decide to leave the beach and explore.

Little Cayman Beaches

Point O’ Sand is the ultimate private setting. In fact, many find that they often have the beach to themselves, which makes this a great beach for romantic or quiet time. In addition, if you are not a swimmer, you will love the fact that the water stays ankle deep for about 15 feet and then has a gradual drop off after that.

If you would rather be closer to the action, then the Little Cayman Beach is ideal for you. You can lay on some hammocks under cabanas and lounge your day away. Or, if you want to do some diving, the Reef Divers has the staff and experience to help you experience diving at its best. They offer guided diving boat trips and snorkeling.
