Classics at the Cinema

Every Tuesday, Camana Bay hosts Classics at the Cinema, an event featuring a new film each week. Classic movies run in the venue’s VIP theater and tickets are only CI$20. Cinemagoers receive a free small popcorn with ticket purchase.

Summer Splash

All summer long, splash around in Camana Bay’s Jasmine and Crescent Fountains from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. or watch as others have fun. Escape the heat by playing in the fountains (kids can build their own playgrounds). Stay into the evening and enjoy dinner at one of Camana Bay’s fantastic restaurants.

Kids and their families can have fun all summer long in Camana Bay, a lively waterfront town located just minutes from South Bay Beach Club. Story Time

Every Tuesday and Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., children can hear stories at Books & Books in Camana Bay. These events are free and they’re perfect for toddlers who like to listen to a great story and participate in sing-alongs.

Each week there is a different exciting book to explore and new songs to sing. Young readers can use their imaginations and expand their minds, as they embrace their creative sides with popular stories and singing.

Imagination Playground

Camana Bay’s Imagination Playground is a new concept in play that fosters sensory exploration and creativity. The playground is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. every Tuesday and Saturday in July.

Imagination Playground a free space for kids that promotes inclusion and discovery. Giant foam blocks, wagons, mats, crates and fabric provide the perfect setting for building, dreaming, exploring and playing. After an afternoon at Imagination Playground, snack it up at one of the restaurants or snack shops in Camana Bay for a treat or dinner.

Summer Camps in Camana Bay

Every summer, Camana Bay hosts summer camps for kids of every age. There are opportunities to dive into cuisine, art, photography, sports and craft projects. In the past, children have learned to play frisbee, cricket, golf, football and basketball at Camana Bay summer camps. They’ve enjoyed science projects, ocean exploration, along with gardening and building community.

A Budding Chef Culinary Camp is always a highlight of the summer. Children make pasta and Super Snacks as well as farm-to-table dishes created with ingredients sourced from Camana Bay’s weekly farmers market.

Last year’s music camp for children ages 4 to 12 was a hit. Young musicians trained their ears to appreciate the fine details of music and they even put on a talent show.

July in Camana Bay will be filled with thrills for kids’ and nighttime movies to art displays and fresh farmers market eats.

Camana Bay is a lively waterfront village on Grand Cayman, just minutes from South Bay Beach Club. It’s our island’s version of a small town and it comprises 685 master-planned acres of shops, restaurants and gathering spaces.

Open Canvas (Every Wednesday)

Every Wednesday in July in Camana Bay, Open Canvas provides a venue for local artists to display their work to the public. They come together to reveal their latest creations, and many of the artisans paint new pieces right at the venue. Watch art come to life at Open Canvas, which takes place from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Camana Bay Cinema’s Kids Club (Saturday, July 7)

On Saturday, July 11, kids and adults can enjoy a classic family-friendly movie with softer sound and brighter lights, perfect for little ones and their older companions. Tickets to the Camana Bay Cinema’s Kids Club at Camana Bay Cinema on the 11th are CI$15 per person and Cars 2 (PG) is the scheduled film (subject to change).

Culture at the Cinema (Saturday, July 21)

Culture at the Cinema is a series of films screened at Camana Bay Cinema. On Saturday, July 21, Macbeth is the movie of choice and it begins promptly at 8 p.m. Culture at the Cinema is an 18-years-and-over event. Tickets are available at the Camana Bay Cinema box office.

To get to Camana Bay from South Bay Beach Club and Seven Mile Beach, just follow the footpath sights that sit along West Bay Road. You’ll go up and over The Rise, a pedestrian walkway, and then straight into The Paseo in Camana Bay’s Town Centre.

Constitution Day Fireworks, Grand Cayman

On July 4th, Grand Cayman celebrates independence with its American friends. The date marks Constitution Day in the Cayman Islands, a commemoration of the first written Cayman Island constitution approved by London in 1958 and official on July 4th, 1959.

The holiday is a proud time each year for residents on our islands. We get together and revel in freedom and friendship, and enjoy a grand fireworks display in Camana Bay.

This year’s festive Constitution Day celebration in Camana Bay takes place on Monday, July 2, just a couple of days before the actual holiday. From 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at The Crescent in Camana Bay, we will listen to live music, eat great food, play games, win prizes, paint our kids’ faces and watch a spectacular fireworks show.

The Crescent is an open-space that’s our version of a small town center with meeting areas and incredible views of the water into the North Sound. Join us at The Crescent for a free fireworks display and good times. The entertainment will be off the charts and there will be plenty of drinks flowing.

About Constitution Day

Constitution Day in the Cayman Islands celebrates the day when we no longer were a dependency of Jamaica. The Cayman Islands relationship with Jamaica changed once again in 1962 when that country became independent. In 1972, a revised constitution had a profound effect on Cayman and all of its residents.

There would be other constitutional changes over the years, with the Bill of Rights established in 2012 perhaps being the most significant. A public meeting of roughly 500 people led to a spirited discussion and debate that would shape the Bill of Rights and the rights of the Cayman public.

You can easily get to Camana Bay from the strip at Seven Mile Beach. Just follow the footpath signs that sit on West Bay Road. They’ll guide you up and over a pedestrian walkway called The Rise and you’ll be on your way to The Paseo in Camana Bay’s Town Centre.

Grease By The Cayman Drama Society

Grease is coming to The Prospect Playhouse in Red Bay, Grand Cayman for 3 weekends of performances in June. Tickets to the event are now on sale and are expected to sell out quickly, so grab yours while you can.

Rediscover a classic story set against the hoppin’ backdrop of Rock ‘n’ Roll in the 1950s. Theatergoers will be transported to Rydell High School in 1959, right into the lives of new-girl-in-town Sandy and too-cool-for-school Danny Zuko. A secret summertime romance spins this tale that skips a beat when the pair get back to school in the fall.

Things are different now. Sandy tries to navigate Rydell’s tricky social circles and stay on Danny’s radar. Danny, however, has to maintain his reputation of the school’s tough guy and doesn’t have time for sweet stuff. Leave it to the Pink Ladies though to help their new girlfriend Sandy win back the greaser gang’s leader.

Grease was created by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey in 1971, and it was performed 3,388 times during its first run on Broadway. The play received 7 prestigious Tony Award nominations. Grease played in London’s West End in 1974 and the film adaptation because a pop culture sensation in 1978. In fact, the eponymous movie is often cited as the most popular cinematic musical of all time.

Since it’s rise to cult status in the 70s, Grease has been back to famed Broadway and the West End. It has also run around the world. Cayman Drama Society is proud to bring Cayman Islands visitors and locals their rendition of Grease beginning on Friday, June 1st.

Flowers One Mile Sea Swim & Walk & Watch 2018

What better way is there to enjoy the beautiful blue waters surrounding Grand Cayman than participating in a refreshing swim and leisure walk on the shore? Casual and Olympic-level swimmers can dive into the sea or simply onlook on June 18 for the annual Flowers One Mile Sea Swim & Walk & Watch.

The yearly event draws roughly 1,000 locals and tourists who take part in a 1-mile swim running parallel to Seven Mile Beach. Though there are great prizes to be had just for finishing the swim, many participants just come to walk the beach and watch the swimmers.

Schedule of Events

Flowers One Mile Sea Swim & Walk & Watch starts at Tiki Beach and ends at Westin Grand Cayman. Check-in is from 12 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. and the race starts sharply at 2 p.m. (Depending on the ocean currents on the day of the race, the start and finish locations may reverse – all notifications will be announced prior).

On Monday June 18th, serious swimmers will take part in Flowers International 5K and 10K swims. Check-in, arm marking and the reading of the rules for this race is at 5:30 a.m. The Male 5K and 10K begins at 7 a.m. and the Female 5K and 10K starts at 7:05 a.m. The location for this event is TBA (see the Flowers Sea Swim for updates).

Swim & Walk & Watch

If you’re visiting Grand Cayman from June 16th to the 18th, head to Seven Mile Beach to compete in or watch the Flowers One Mile Sea Swim & Walk & Watch. Discover a great gathering of people along the crystal clear and flat waters of this world-famous beach. The sunning shoreline at Seven Mile Beach is one of the biggest tourist destinations on the planet for a good reason, and this natural wonder is home to one of Cayman’s top sporting events during June.

A rich and rewarding race, Flowers One Mile Sea Swim & Walk & Watch offers the opportunity to win $100,000 in prizes. Better than these riches, the event is also a fundraiser that sees all entry fees donated to a local charity. Competitors each year are from various abilities and range from 8 to 80 years young. Every race so far has brought Cayman brothers and Olympic swimmers Brett and Shaune Fraser to participate. These locals have also provided children with inspiration.

If you don’t want to get in the water, you can walk the beach or sit and watch the race. This is an excellent way to share the thrill of the day and contribute to a great cause. Walkers and watchers can win fabulous prizes too!

Free Cayman Islands National Museum Admission For Residents

On Saturday, June 2, residents of the Cayman Islands will receive free admission to the Cayman Islands National Museum. The museum is a great place to learn about the cultural heritage of all 3 islands and discover more about our unique geography.

While visitors to Grand Cayman don’t get into the museum free of charge, the attraction is still worth a trip. This year, the Cayman Islands National Museum celebrates its 27th anniversary. The beloved museum sits inside of the oldest surviving open-to-the-public building in the Cayman Islands, which was constructed in the 1830s.

Galleries at the Cayman Islands National Museum

The Cayman Islands National Museum houses 2 permanent galleries, 3 rotating galleries (including 1 for kids) and an audiovisual theatre. Its mission is to provide educational and creative exhibits and programming that engage people in a fun way.

Natural History Gallery

In the museum’s Natural History Gallery, explore the various habitats on our islands and take a simulated submarine dive all the way down to the Cayman Islands’ famous wall. Learn about nesting turtle sites and Cayman animal life as well as our wetlands.

On Saturday, April 21, Culture at the Cinema presents Hamlet at Regal Cinema in Camana Bay. Part of a monthly series that is a favorite on Grand Cayman, this event is a filmed, live presentation of William Shakespeare’s Hamlet that will run on a movie screen.

Culture at the Cinema brings internationally renowned stage shows to the Cayman Islands with theater and ballet productions that are recorded around the world and then show to audiences at Regal Cinema. These shows give residents and visitors a chance to experience the theater within a beloved, local and intimate setting. A full bar, family friendly drinks, menu and snack offerings accompanies each theatrical production screening.

The April 2018, the Culture at the Cinema showing of Hamlet begins at 8 p.m. Doors open at 7 p.m. In the National Theatre Live performance that originally ran in 2015, Academy Award® nominee Benedict Cumberbatch (BBC’s The Imitation Game, Sherlock) assumed the title role. This version of Hamlet has been viewed by more than 700,000 people around the world and it returns to cinemas this year to reach an even broader audience.

As a country prepares for war and arms itself, a family destroys itself. Hamlet is forced to avenge his father’s death, but the task he must complete paralyzes him. The impossibility of his predicament swells rage inside that threatens his sanity and his country’s security. Lyndsey Turner (Chimerica, Posh) directed this production of Hamlet and Sonia Friedman Productions produced it.

Stop by the Farmers & Artisans Market in Camana Bay every Wednesday and pick up fresh-picked produce, homemade artisanal foods, local handicrafts and more. This weekly farmers and artisans market is a showcase for delightful things grown and made on Grand Cayman.

Each week, Camana Bay’s shopkeepers and restaurant owners join roughly 40 growers and specialty products purveyors. The offerings at this celebration of local culture and goods includes seasonal fruits and vegetables, gifts, gourmet foods, skincare, jewelry, flowers, teas and coffees, seasonings, jams and more.

The Camana Bay Farmers & Artisans Market opens at 3 p.m. and features live entertainment throughout the course of the event. Musicians and artists come to provide their talents in real-time, demonstrating the creative spirit of the people of Grand Cayman. Buy a kite before or at this year’s Kaibo Kite Fest on Grand Cayman, just make sure you have one because you’re in for a high-flying good time at a fun Caribbean tradition. Kaibo Beach on Grand Cayman is again the site for Kaibo Kite Fest, a joy-filled festival for awe seekers of all ages. This grand celebration of kites features opportunities to fly home-made or professionally constructed kites, and enter a competition to possibly be awarded “best flyer.”

There will be dancing in the sand to music from Bona Fide, a local band who is scheduled to perform unplugged from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Paddle boarding, kayaking and more await those who make their way to beautiful Kaibo Beach on Monday, April 2, 2018.

About Kaibo Kite Fest

Kaibo Kite Fest is part of Kaibo Beach community organizers’ vision to bring Caymanian culture to residents and tourists. The kite festival is an unofficial welcome of the summer season and it takes place when the wind is absolutely perfect for kite flying. The festival happens to take place over Easter break this year, which means many Cayman visitors on vacation have the opportunity to come and enjoy a prized Grand Cayman location.

Grand Cayman’s breezy shoreline will offer so plenty of beauty and lush landscape to be enjoyed. This Kite Fest is a way to showcase how lovely our island beaches are for kids, families and any type of resident or tourist. The 9th annual Off The Beaten Track ultra-marathon is being held on Sunday, Feb. 25, beginning at 5 a.m. Consequently, if warm, tropical breezes and intense racing speak to you, now is the time to act fast and make your reservations to get to the Cayman Islands for this one-of-a-kind event.

This innovative race is an excellent challenge for both first-time and veteran racers, as well as those who have entered this very event in the past. That is because the race course changes substantially from year to year, winding over sandy beaches, back roads and tropical bush. What’s more, the exact race course is kept secret until one week before the event, after which it is key for entrants to study it ahead of time to be aware of its impending challenges.

This event is styled after Morrocco’s Marathon des Sables, a 156-mile run over six days across that country’s hot sands, and allows entrants to compete individually or as part of a six-member team.

More than just a race, Off The Beaten Track also benefits the individual charity each of its six corporate sponsors choose to represent, as well as Facing Africa, an organization that sends surgeons and medical supplies to Sub-Saharan Africa to help treat facial deformities in children there.

As we all know, art comes in many shapes and forms, and only a select few pieces make it to the museums and galleries across the globe. Still, there is art everywhere, and usually the best creations come from the streets—and sometimes the beaches—of communities all over the world.

Here in the Cayman Islands, we take our art seriously, but we also like to have fun with it. That is why our annual Chalkfest celebration has become such a hit.

Chalk This Up to Art
This year’s Chalkfest, to be held Saturday, March 31st, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Camana Bay, marks the 14th year of this very popular event. Artists of all ages, styles and abilities are invited to leave their easels, paints and brushes at home and trade them all in for free chalk and the slab of pavement of their choice to simply make art.

Nonetheless, there will be first-, second- and third-place prizes for the best individual and group art works in a number of age categories, including those under 5 years of age, 5 to 7 years old, 8 to 10 years old, 11 and 12 years of age, 13 to 18 years old, and adults 19 years of age and older. Only one entry per category is permitted. Participating artists are encouraged to bring sponges, rags and buckets to help creative types make the most of their chalk work.

If you are interested, you can register on the day of the event. Fees are about $12.00 for adults and $4 for children, depending on the exact exchange rate at the time. It’s all for a good cause, though, as proceeds go toward the Cayman Islands’ National Gallery Outreach Programmes.

In addition to all the creating, there will be multitudes of Easter-themed treats and games available to participants, as well as an artisanal market, face painting, music, balloon animals and a story reading sponsored by Books & Books.

Held on Feb. 24 and 25 at Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Garden in the district of North Side on Frank Sound Road, the exhibition will showcase the most beautiful locally grown orchids and host a plant sale of specially imported orchids, most of which will be in bloom. More than that, though, this event also promotes the conservation of Cayman’s native orchids, as well as educating visitors about the most effective ways to grow orchids. In addition, proceeds from the show will go toward establishing an orchid garden in the Botanic Park. The show is the Botanic Park’s major fundraising event, and thus it attracts floral enthusiasts from throughout the country.

It all started in 2008, when the Botanic Park was invited to design an entry for London’s prestigious Chelsea Flower Show and won the silver medal. The following year, the park’s entry won the gold, as well as the President’s Most Creative Award.

About the Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Garden
The Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Garden opened in 1994 when the queen herself led a ribbon-cutting ceremony to inaugurate this momentous occasion in Caymans history. Though the park’s Woodland Trail was the only attraction complete at the time, over the years, it has evolved and become the world-class facility that it is today.

It will also offer visitors the chance to enjoy many mouthwatering culinary treats while listening to the signature Caribbean sounds of steel pans, fiddles and drums during the live performances and featured art.

About Cayfest
This national festival begins with the National Arts and Culture Awards the previous week. This ceremony celebrates those who have excelled in the arts or contributed to the artistic and cultural heritage of the Cayman Islands. Then, just a day before all of the Caymans and its visitors gather for Red Sky at Night, the island hosts Dress for Culture Day. Now in its fifth year, this event pays homage to the incredible diversity of nationalities that make up the rich mixture of the Caymans’ population. Individuals dress up to celebrate the approximately 135 different ethnicities that are part of the Caymans’ stew to show their respect for and tolerance of people of all races.
