This annual event benefits the Cayman Island Orchid Society and the Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park in addition to promoting native orchid conservation. You’ll learn orchid growing techniques and care tips from experienced gardeners, attend educational presentations and sample delicious barbecue from some of the country’s best restaurants and eateries. The event also includes hundreds of stunning orchids on display, many of which are for sale.

It’s $5 KYD to attend the Orchid Show, which goes from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm on both days.

Two Fantastic Charity Events Happening In Grand Cayman This March

Perhaps you want to do more this year to help mankind. Maybe giving back is a favorite pastime and one you don’t want to skimp on simply because you’re on vacation. If you’re planning a visit to Grand Cayman this March, the island paradise has two charity events scheduled that are as fun for the whole family as they are important to those they benefit. Take a moment to learn about these events before planning your itinerary. Depending on how long your visit to Grand Cayman will be, you may be able to attend both.

A Walk In Her Shoes

Support the Cayman Islands Crisis Centre that provides women, children, and men in abusive relationships with a safe haven. The crisis centre notes there is “no excuse for domestic abuse” on their website and sponsors several events throughout the year, including A Walk In Her Shoes on Thursday, March 5th. Men are encouraged to wear blinged-out heels as they strut their stuff down the designated area of Camana Bay in Grand Cayman. Painting toenails and wearing dresses and wigs are suggested as well to add to the fun.

Participants can register individually or as part of a group, with the entrance fee of $30 KYD. Every participant must walk a minimum of five laps in their fancy footwear. For every $150 raised, a lap gets removed. The centre hopes to reach its goal of $50,000 KYD this year; the event starts at 5:00 pm and ends at 7:00 pm.

Light Up The Night Breast Cancer Beach Walk

Enjoy participating in the 9th Annual Light Up The Night Breast Cancer Beach Walk on Saturday, March 7th. You’ll raise money for the Breast Cancer Foundation as you walk from the Royal Palms Beach Club to the Ritz-Carlton and back. Make a $25 KYD donation when you register and receive one raffle ticket entry; each additional ticket is $5 KYD.

Walk by the light of the (nearly) full moon before enjoying cocktail specials at the Royal Palms, as well as 10% off food. Who knows, maybe you will win one of the fantastic raffle prizes. The event goes from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm.

Since these events are so close together, it’s entirely possible to participate in both if you visit Grand Cayman for five to seven days. Don’t wait to book accommodations for your island adventure–visit South Bay Beach Club today.

National Trust Events This February

The Hatitude Brunch Is Back

The National Trust for the Cayman Islands is all about conservation and hosts a variety of events throughout the year to help preserve what makes the Caribbean Islands so beautiful and unique. These events help protect native animals and plants, groundwater, marine life, and all-natural areas. One of the National Trust’s biggest events is the annual Hatitude Brunch at the Grand Old House on South Sound. Now in its seventh year, take a moment to learn about this special event.

“Tea By The Sea”

Every year the brunch theme changes, with this year’s festivities labeled “Tea By The Sea.” The family-friendly event happens on Saturday, February 1st from 2 pm to 4:30 pm, allowing you to pack other activities into your itinerary that day. The Hatitude Brunch costs CI$75.00 for adult National Trust members, CI$90.00 for non-adult members, and CI$45.00 and CI$50.00 for child members and non-members, respectively.

A Chance To Emphasize Conservation

Since proceeds from the Hatitude Brunch go towards Cayman island preservation efforts, the event provides an ideal opportunity to teach children about protecting the environment. If you have young ones who will accompany you on your Grand Cayman getaway, consider adding the brunch to your itinerary to help your kids learn more about the world around them and why protecting nature is so essential. And since you’ll be in a naturally-stunning location, stressing conservation to your brood will be even easier. It’s easy to fall in love with nature when you’re surrounded by awe-inspiring landscapes.

More National Trust Events This February

If you won’t arrive in time for the Hatitude Brunch, there are other National Trust events to select from in February. 4 Must-See Wrecks In Grand Cayman

As part of the Carribean, Grand Cayman was once a destination for rum runners, pirates, and assorted major trading companies. Various wrecks are found around the famous island, including those you can explore during your trip to the tropical paradise. And while these wrecks are from (relatively) modern times, they allow you to step back into history and learn more about Grand Cayman. Review some of the best-loved wrecks beside the famous Kittiwake here before booking your vacation:

Oro Verde Wreck

Discovered in the early 1980s, the Oro Verde Wreck is in pieces off of Seven Mile Beach but it’s still worth a look. The area teams with colorful tropical fish and native corals, with the wreck about 50 feet below the surface. And while it has morphed into an artificial reef, you can still see the bow, moorings, stern, and other ship pieces.

Ridgefield Wreck

The Ridgefield SS was once a World War II ship. It ran aground on the barrier reef along the east side of the island and is located only 20 feet below the surface. Locals who live in the area can see most of the ship during low tide.

Doc Polson Wreck

The cable-laying ship named for a beloved island doctor is about 50 feet down off the West Bay part of the island. It functions as an artificial reef and has become a popular dive for locals and tourists alike because divers can access much of the ship, including the engine room, bridge, and holds. The ship sits in an open area of water surrounded by sand, so there’s no risk of getting lost or wondering what happened to your diving companions. Simply watch out for sharp edges and keep in mind the famous Kittiwake Wreck is nearby if you’re feeling ambitious.

LCM David Nicholson Wreck

Named after famed divemaster David Nicolson, this small landing craft was intentionally sunk in front of the Sunset House Hotel. It sits in an open sand area 55 feet down and has made another welcome artificial reef. You’ll see many yellow tube and purple finger sponges, as well as angelfish among other tropical friends. Spotted eagle rays have been known to pay the wreck visits. It offers easy access as well as many treats for the eyes.

Enjoy these and other dive sites during your Grand Cayman adventure. Book your luxury accommodations at South Beach Bay Club today so you don’t miss a second of the action.

What Can You Expect At Grand Cayman’s Best Beaches?

Grand Cayman features an assortment of stunning beaches symbolizing the Carribean’s pristine beauty. Learn about some of these outstanding stretches of white sand and what you can expect at each, including local wildlife that calls these beaches home.

Smith Cove

Travel to the southwest section of the tropical island paradise to Smith Cove, a spot that’s as perfect for swimming as it is snorkeling. It’s a relatively private beach in part because buses don’t visit the area often; however, if you take a rental car you’ll enjoy peace and quiet for as long as you like. Snorkeling equals visions of hundreds of colorful fish, and that’s in addition to the creatures along the shoreline tidal pools. Picnic tables are also available here if you decide to pack a lunch, and there’s easy parking across the street.

Governors Beach

Named for the Governor’s House, Governors Beach provides another quiet option with excellent snorkeling. Swimming out to the reef takes little effort, with the beach is also within walking distance to Margaritaville. If you purchase floating chairs, you can easily spend a few hours lounging on and by the sea.

Seven Mile Beach

Seven Mile Beach is perhaps the most well-known of Grand Cayman’s sandy destinations, and one that features a lively population of tourists and locals regardless of the time of year. There’s swimming, diving, snorkeling, parasailing, paddleboarding, wet bike, and canoeing options at this beach located close to the Westin. And despite its immense popularity, the beach is clean and well-maintained.

Cemetery Beach and Reef

If snorkeling is your thing, you can’t pass up a visit to Cemetery Beach and Reef. It’s teeming with wildlife including peacock flounder, lobsters, pufferfish, scorpionfish, parrotfish, and wrasses among others in calm, crystal-clear waters. Sea grape trees provide ample shade from the tropical sun at this slice of white sand heaven.

Spotts Beach

Like the other beaches on this list, Spotts Beach offers fantastic snorkeling opportunities. Yet, it includes one of the bigger marine mammals that’s always exciting to catch glimpses of- the sea turtle. If you spend about 15 minutes snorkeling above seagrass, you’ll be guaranteed to see the gentle creatures. Keep in mind the currents can be strong here!

Experience The Queen Elizabeth II Royal Botanic Park While Visiting Grand Cayman!

Grand Cayman offers plenty to do, including many landmarks and attractions sure to pique the interest of history buffs. Among the most beautiful historical attractions on the Carribean island is the Queen Elizabeth II Royal Botanic Park. Take a moment to learn about this fabulous garden to consider adding it to your Grand Cayman itinerary.

The Gardens

Queen Elizabeth II opened the park in 1994, which has since grown to include a variety of stunning gardens. Whether you spend one hour, two hours, or the entire day at this glorious attraction, your senses will never get bored. Explore the Floral Colour Garden featuring pink, red, orange, yellow, blue, white, purple, and lavender blooms in specific areas, as well as native trees and grasses. Visit the Heritage Garden next, which includes an old Caymanian house dating back to 1900 as well as sand and medicinal gardens.

Other gardens include the Xerophytic Garden full of succulents that thrive in dry conditions. The park is also famous for orchids and includes an “Orchid Boardwalk” that naturally features the island’s national flower, the Wild Banana Orchid.

The Lake & Woodland Trail

The Queen Elizabeth II Royal Botanic Park includes a three-acre lake that varies in size throughout the year depending on rainfall. You’ll see native ducks among other wildlife, as the lake has become a sanctuary for animal friends.

The Woodland Trail allows locals and tourists alike to experience some of Grand Cayman’s pristine forests. The trail is ⅘ of a mile long and therefore walkable for most people. You’ll meander through dry and swampy areas, as well as canopied sections thanks to native trees. The rare Cockspur Tree and Bull Thatch Palms can be found here.

The Crocodile Hole & Blue Iguana Habitat

Among the many other sites to see at this colorful park include the Crocodile Hole, which features the fossilized remains of the Cuban Freshwater Crocodile. These living dinosaurs were originally found throughout the Cayman Islands but now only reside in the Zapata Swamplands of Cuba. However, there are plenty of turtles that call the park’s Hickatee Habitat Wetland home.

Other attractions include the Blue Iguana Habitat that was created in 1987 as a way to protect these incredible “blue dinosaurs.” The iguanas enjoy free range throughout the park, so make certain one isn’t under your car before you leave!

What You Need To Know About Visiting Starfish Point In Grand Cayman

One of the most beloved beaches on Grand Cayman is Starfish Point, which is aptly named for the innumerable starfish dotting the coastline. This beach overlooks North Sound and features calm, shallow waters that starfish enjoy. And while there’s no entrance fee, there are plenty of tour operators who will happily take you to this little section of beach. If visiting starfish sounds like a Grand Cayman vacation must, here’s what you need to know before you go:

The Drive From Seven Mile Beach Is Long

If you are among the tourists staying in the Seven Mile Beach section of Grand Cayman, consider whether you want to make the drive to Starfish Beach. It’s about an hour away, making an organized tour a welcome alternative. And since some people have trouble finding the beach because it isn’t on a main road, allowing an experienced guide to lead the way will help ensure a timely, safe visit.

The Starfish Must Remain In The Shallows

As tempting as it can be to pick up a starfish for a photo opportunity, these marine creatures must stay where they are. Picking them up exposes the animals to damaging oxygen. And since some of the ‘fish anchor themselves to rocks along the shoreline, ripping one off a stone damages its tube feet. These feet regrow in time; however, there is no need to stress the creatures in this way. Starfish are wild animals who should be left alone, so take pictures from a distance.

The Water Is Perfectly Clear

Getting the pictures you want is easy thanks to the crystal-clear Caribbean water. Consider purchasing a waterproof camera before your trip if you want to photograph the creatures up-close, but again take care not to disturb them.

Water, Sunscreen, & Snacks Are Necessary

Your trip to Starfish Point requires plenty of water as well as a few snacks. There are no concession stands or eateries on this stretch of beach, as it is meant as a beautiful, natural example of the island’s pristine beauty. Don’t forget your sunscreen either since the tropical sun will leave you lobster-red without the right protection. Bring a broad-brimmed hat and sunglasses as well for further protection from the unforgiving sun.

Enjoy this lovely area of Grand Cayman that includes ancient coconut trees. Schedule your island stay now by contacting South Beach Bay Club for luxurious accommodations.

Need To Fill Out Your Grand Cayman Itinerary? Consider Bioluminescence Snorkeling!

Grand Cayman has no shortage of things to do, which naturally includes plenty of snorkeling opportunities. One of the arguably most exciting snorkeling options just off the coast of this Caribbean island is all about bioluminescence. Millions of dinoflagellates, a type of single-celled plankton, produce light when their habitats are disturbed during the night. And while some think the resulting illumination is a sign of harm, there is no evidence that boaters or snorkelers damage the plankton in any way.

If nighttime snorkeling in shimmering island waters sounds ideal to you, here’s what you need to know about this incredible experience:

Bio Bay Was Originally A Real Estate Project

The bioluminescence making up “Bio Bay” in Grand Cayman resulted from the development of private villas along the coastline. Construction shifted the physical characteristics of the bay, essentially trapping the plankton and keeping their numbers high. And while numbers vary according to the tide and weather, you can expect to bask in a glittering bay if you take this snorkel tour.

You’re Perfectly Safe To Snorkel

Snorkeling at night can sound a little dangerous, even if there’s millions of plankton illuminating the water. But have no fear–literally–because there are no sharks to worry about in this area. Sharks are not known to frequent this bay and there has never even been a shark attack in Grand Cayman. Additionally, the water is warm so you don’t have to worry about catching a chill with nighttime snorkeling. It is also free of all waves and currents.

If you visit Bio Bay in the summer, jellyfish may be present. However, tour operators provide full wetsuits during summer months to keep participants safe from the stinging fish. Visiting Grand Cayman in the winter means no jellyfish in the water to contend with. And the good news is the pain from a sting typically lasts no more than five minutes!

Staying On The Boat Is Also An Option

Some people prefer to see bioluminescence from the comfort of the tour boat. If you are among these people, look for a tour that offers free drinks such as soda and beer. Boats are always perfectly cushioned with few fellow passengers. Small groups ensure these experiences are worth every penny, with most tours offering free transportation from Seven Mile Beach.

Enjoy nighttime snorkeling among many other fantastic Grand Cayman adventures. Schedule your stay today by contacting South Bay Beach Club.

How To Prepare For A Cayman Spirits Co. Distillery Tour

Rum is the staple spirit of the Caribbean. Whether the brown or clear liquor is one of your favorites or you simply want to learn more about the history of Caribbean Rum, the Cayman Spirits Co. has what you are looking for. The operational craft distillery company offers several tour options, including those featuring Georgetown-area shopping so you can make libation-inspired purchases. If a distillery tour is a Grand Cayman must for you, use these tips to ensure the experience is everything you hoped for:

Get A Good Night’s Sleep

The effects of alcohol are always more severe when you don’t sleep well the night before. Get seven to eight hours of restful sleep the night before your tour to arrive refreshed and ready to learn all about the titular spirit. Being well-rested also helps you feel energized and alert instead of groggy, irritable, and unable to concentrate.

Eat A Hearty Breakfast

Much like lack of sleep, an empty stomach allows alcohol to hit you sooner. Rather than feeling loopy too early in the day, enjoy a good breakfast so you aren’t hungry when you arrive at the distillery. Consume foods rich in fiber and protein that take longer to digest and keep you satiated so you can try scotch bonnet rum, Seven Fathoms Rum (the national rum of the islands), and local botanical gins among other spirits without getting too intoxicated.

Bring Sun Protection

Drinking in the tropical sun is a surefire ticket to Drunkville, so take steps to protect yourself from UV rays. In addition to wearing plenty of sunblock, consider investing in a wide-brimmed hat and staying in the shade as often as possible. The less sun exposure you get, the more you will be able to fully enjoy your distillery experience.

Stay Hydrated

Alcohol dehydrates the body, which is one of the reasons you get drunk and feel terrible the next day. Sip water as you take this tour to not only stay hydrated and healthy but to dilute the alcohol. Doing so means you retain fewer calories. Alcohol promotes weight gain because the body recognizes it as a toxin, causing your metabolism to stop while your organs try to get rid of the libation as quickly as possible. Water helps you avoid empty calorie-related weight gain.

What To Expect During A Cayman Island Cave Tour

Grand Cayman offers plenty of fantastic ways to fill your days, including a wide variety of natural attractions that leave you in awe. Among these many attractions is the Cayman Crystal Caves, a stunning natural wonder that formed over millions of years. If planning a visit to this stalactite and stalagmite attraction is on your Grand Cayman to-do list, here’s what you need to know before you enter:

Look But Don’t Touch

When entering the Cayman Crystal Caves or any other stalactite and stalagmite cave, you can look but you absolutely cannot touch anything. The oils on your skin have a damaging effect on the minerals, resulting in degradation that affects the cave’s appearance and quality. Stay in your tour group’s line and maintain a healthy distance from all cave structures when taking photos.

Prepare For A Slight Chill

Since caves are under the ground, they are naturally cooler than the surface temperature. And while Cayman Crystal Caves has open-air sections and therefore access to tropical breezes, it is still a good idea to bring a hoodie or sweatshirt with you to avoid feeling cold when you should be enjoying the stunning surroundings.

Know How Long Your Tour Lasts

Check the timeframe for your guided tour, as it will last an hour and a half. In addition to taking a 45-minute walk through the three main caves, including the glittering lake cave and the roots cave, you will enjoy a 30-minute natural walk through the magical tropical forest that created the caves so long ago. Since you will walk for an hour and a half, use the facilities before you enter and ensure you have all of your belongings with you, including your phone or camera.

The tour also includes 15 minutes of free time for enjoying the viewing deck and purchasing something to eat from the snack shop, which is also the gift shop.

Book Before You Arrive In Grand Cayman

Reserve your tour instead of trying to get in the day of. All tours with Cayman Crystal Caves require pre-booking; however, tours are available every day all year long so you shouldn’t have too much trouble. Tour times start at 9 am, with the last one beginning at 4 pm. You may want to see what other attractions are nearby when planning your itinerary.
