Green Mountains, Vermont
This stunning range of mountains, which runs from the border with Massachusetts in the south to the border of Quebec, Canada, to the north, spans about 250 miles. The name of the range isn’t hyperbole, either. When they all begin to slowly change colors, the ensuing theater is almost beyond belief. One does have to see it to believe it.
Berkshire Mountains, Massachusetts
The southern extension of that same mountain range is called the Berkshires in Massachusetts and Connecticut. Because they are a little further south, they offer a slightly later show. Like Vermont, though, the western portion of Massachusetts is extremely rural and wooded, offering a seemingly endless view of greens, reds, oranges and yellows you won’t soon forget.
Asheville and the Blue Ridge Mountains, North Carolina
There is no doubt that New England is the classic destination for viewing fall foliage, but don’t forget that by mid-November, the show is usually over that far north. Asheville and its surrounding mountains offer one of the longest foliage seasons in the country. Coupled with the legendary azure hue of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the kaleidoscope of colors can be breathtaking.
