Parasailing: 6 Things You Need To Know

Parasailing is one of the few ways humans can “fly.” If you wish to defy gravity with this thrilling water activity, there are few things you need to know before strapping yourself to a parachute. Keep the following in mind before parasailing on Grand Cayman or any other beachy paradise:

  • The Weather

You may have booked your reservation weeks ago, but the weather gods do not care. If dark clouds, high winds, torrential rain, or other bad weather is predicted the day of your excursion, reschedule to stay safe. This is especially important if the Coast Guard issued a safety warning. Parasailing towline failure can easily (and unfortunately) result in fatalities when the weather is rough.

  • Parachute Control

Any reputable parasailing instructor provides a short lesson on controlling the parachute while you are in the air. Pay close attention to your instructor and ask questions about anything you are unsure of. Parachute ropes typically feature color marks on either side to help you control the balloon-like object with ease.

  • Age & Weight Limits

Most parasailing companies have strict age and weight limits to protect their clients. Participants typically must be at least 10 years old or under 65 years old and weigh no more than 176 pounds. If numerous riders go up together, the combined weight should not exceed 450 pounds.

  • Eating & Drinking

If you have been enjoying island cocktails, you cannot go parasailing. Not only will you have problems reacting in time and may not be able to land correctly, but you may also find yourself getting seriously sick. A full stomach is another parasailing no-no because again it can make you feel ill. And who wants to say, “I threw up while parasailing!”??

  • The Crew

Since you won’t be able to communicate with the crew once you are in the air, get to know them before you leave the ground. Crews use either arm or hand signals to communicate with their riders, so go over all signals regarding direction, speed, desire to come down, etc.

  • Enjoying The Experience

Finally, enjoy your experience! Parasailing is a wholly unique activity almost anyone can enjoy. It provides views of your gorgeous tropical paradise that you cannot experience any other way, so consider bringing a GoPro or similar device to capture the magic for you while you sail through the air.
