Snorkeling For The First Time? Keep These 5 Tips In Mind

Snorkeling provides a beautiful way to see more of what lies beneath the ocean’s glittering surface. It gives you an inside look into the watery lives of marine life, including fish, sea turtles, crustaceans, and coral among other creatures. If you plan on snorkeling for the first time during your vacation to Grand Cayman, use these tips to make it a glorious, unforgettable experience:

Get Your Mask Properly Fitted

Do not rush the mask fitting process, whether you are renting or buying. Find a mask that fits snugly but comfortably around your face. Press it gently against your face as you inhale through your nose to create suction. Breathe out as you take your hands off the mask–if it stays put and feels comfortable otherwise, it is the one for you. If it doesn’t, move on to the next option. Keep in mind the mask will have to accommodate the snorkel, so don’t leave the store or rental facility before trying the mask on with the curved tube.

Wear Comfortable Fins

Ensure your fins fit well and feel comfortable. Avoid those with heels since they will eventually rub and create blisters. Also, ensure your fins are sand-free before your snorkeling excursion to avoid further rubbing and pain.

Keep Your Mask Clean

Avoid foggy mask problems by keeping the accessory clean. Dirty masks accumulate moisture at a much faster rate because water droplets attach to dirt, oil, and dust. Clean masks allow moisture to collect at the bottom so it does not impair your vision. If you plan on snorkeling several times during your tropical trip, you may want to use an anti-fog solution made of 10 to 12 baby shampoo drops in a 2-ounce water bottle.

Use A Dry Snorkel

Work with a dry snorkel or one with a splash guard to keep seawater out of the breathing tube when you go under. Dry snorkels are particularly helpful because they feature valves that automatically shut the minute you go under water. These snorkels also have purges at the bottom so you can blow water out quickly and easily.

Practice First

Do a practice run in a pool so you get used to breathing in this slightly-unusual way. Practice runs also make certain you feel comfortable in your mask and fins. Make any adjustments as necessary so you spend every moment of your snorkeling adventure enjoying the views.
